Supercars star heads new road safety campaign

The recent Queensland Road Safety Week featured Australian Supercars star Garth Tander sending an important message to drivers that trucks need space to keep you safe.

Garth joined Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey, and staff to launch the We Need Space campaign in Queensland.

The campaign provides advice on how light vehicle drivers should act when they are around trucks.

Recent research shows that light vehicles cause up to four-out-of-five fatal crashes involving heavy vehicles.

“Being aware of simple safety tips such as a truck’s blind spot, allowing extra distance for a heavy vehicle to brake and the space needed to turn can reduce the risk for all road users,” Mr Bailey said.

“If even a driver as experienced as Garth Tander has more to learn about driving safely around trucks, then everyone can take ten minutes out of their day and listen to this important message.

“Across Australia we’ve seen a gradual decline in heavy vehicle fatalities from 220 in 2014 to 177 in 2018, but that figure is still too high.”

Garth is joined in the campaign by truck driver Kerri Connors, who was named Tasmania’s best professional truck driver at the Tasmanian Transport Industry awards in October 2018.

The We Need Space Campaign was funded by the NHVR’s Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative program, supported by the Commonwealth Government.
