Braking bad: NHVR issues safety warning after serious brake failure incident

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is urging heavy vehicle operators to prioritise their vehicle maintenance after a brake drum exploded from a moving truck and struck a vehicle travelling behind it.

The incident comes as NHVR data reveals 28 per cent of heavy vehicles issued a defect notice between January and July this year had a brake-related defect, reinforcing the importance of routine inspections and preventative maintenance.

NHVR Director Central Region Brett Patterson said the warning was particularly relevant after the recent incident in NSW, where a brake drum exploded from a heavy vehicle decelerating from a high speed.

"Most operators take maintenance seriously, but this incident is a stark reminder that something as simple as preventative maintenance can make a huge difference,” Mr Patterson said.

“In this instance, Safety and Compliance Officers intercepted the heavy vehicle and directed it to the local station for a comprehensive mechanical inspection that resulted in a number of vehicle defects.

“An incident like this could have resulted in devastating consequences, so it’s extremely fortunate nobody was seriously harmed.”

In NSW alone, more than 4500 heavy vehicles have received a brake defect notice since January this year.

Mr Patterson said the incident and the latest defect data highlighted why proper vehicle maintenance remains one of the most important safety measures operators can take.

“It’s critical for heavy vehicle operators and drivers to take the time to ensure their vehicles are in good order, and identify defects or hazards before they became a safety risk on the road,” he said.

“Maintaining your vehicle means issues like those with brakes and other components can be picked up before the vehicle starts its journey.

“Ultimately, that could be the difference between you or someone else making it to their destination safely.”

While regular inspections and maintenance are crucial to reliable braking performance, drivers are reminded to always take caution of road and weather conditions.

The NHVR also encourages industry to consider operating conditions that require more frequent vehicle servicing, such as unsealed roads or travelling in heavy traffic.
