The National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS) was first offered to industry in 1999 as an alternative compliance scheme. It has since evolved as a formal process for recognising operators who have robust safety and other management systems in place. It is also increasingly being used to show compliance with general duty requirements under road transport law.
Heavy vehicle operators can apply for accreditation under the following NHVAS modules:
- Mass Management
- Maintenance Management.
- Fatigue Management: Basic Fatigue Management (BFM)
- Fatigue Management: Advanced Fatigue Management (AFM)
Previously administered by state and territory road transport authorities, the NHVAS is now managed on a national basis by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR). We are the administrators and single point of contact for all NHVAS business including all enquiries, applications and maintaining accreditation.
Any NHVAS accreditation that was granted under the state and territories’ business rules is preserved for the life of that accreditation period.
It is an offence to fail to display and maintain National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme labels on heavy vehicles under the Maintenance Management Accreditation scheme and the Mass Management Accreditation scheme.
NHVAS applications and forms
An application is not complete unless all documents and payment are submitted to the NHVR. Each application form contains a checklist and instructions for your guidance.
Incomplete applications or applications with incorrect payment will delay the application process. A fee calculation table has been included in the application forms to assist with determining the appropriate fees. Visit NHVAS fees for more information.
When you lodge an application it will be submitted to the relevant team for processing. The majority of applications will be completed in well under 14 days, and even quicker for many straightforward applications.

Review of the NHVAS
The NHVR is currently undertaking the review of the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS) as part of the Heavy Vehicle Roadworthiness Program, a joint initiative with the National Transport Commission (NTC).
