An increase to the overall width limit to 2.55 metres is available for trucks fitted with a number of specific safety features.
The Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) provides for three classes of heavy vehicle as a means of managing the different access requirements of different types of heavy vehicles.
General Access Vehicles (GAV) comply with mass and dimension requirements and do not require a notice or permit to operate on the road network.
Concessional Mass Limits (CML) allow an operator to operate at mass limits above the national general limits provided they are accredited under the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS).
General mass and dimension limits are based on the limits set out in the Heavy Vehicle (Mass, Dimension and Loading) National Regulation.
Higher Mass Limits (HML) allow particular heavy vehicles to access additional mass entitlements under certain conditions.
A load on a heavy vehicle must be placed, secured or restrained in a way that meets the performance standards listed in the Heavy Vehicle (Mass, Dimension and Loading) National Regulation.
