Safer Freight Vehicles - Discussion paper

What it is?

The Safer Freight Vehicles - Discussion paper identified possible changes to the Australian Design Rules (ADRs) to facilitate an increased take up of safer and/or more efficient heavy freight vehicles in Australia.

It considered a number of possible changes, including a potential increase to overall vehicle width and removing barriers that prevent the uptake of safer heavy vehicles.

Background

The Commonwealth Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications released the Safer Freight Vehicles - Discussion paper. The paper relates to a key action in the NHVR’s Vehicle Safety and Environmental Technology Uptake Plan (Vehicle SETUP) released in 2020, as well as investigate the introduction of safer, cleaner heavy freight vehicles by minimising regulatory barriers, of the Federal Government’s National Road Safety Action Plan 2018-2020.

Making a submission

The Commonwealth invited public feedback on the proposed changes by 30 June 2021. For more information go to Australian Design Rules
