National Roadworthiness Survey

NRS 2024

The NHVR conducted the third iteration of the National Roadworthiness Survey (NRS) in July 2024. NRS 2024 ran for an approximate period of 12 weeks across all Australian states and territories.

The National Roadworthiness Survey provides a health check of Australia’s heavy vehicle fleet, letting the NHVR monitor the make up of the heavy vehicle fleet and understand how compliant it is. This information allows us to determine where the NHVR and industry are making improvements in vehicle safety in addition to where more focus may be needed.

The results of the survey will allow the NHVR to continue to target safety programs in key safety areas and provide feedback to operators on their vehicle roadworthiness. Through a series detailed mechanical inspections, the NHVR will collect essential data and information to support future safety initiatives and compliance activities.

The results of NRS 2024 will be compared to the previous surveys conducted in 2016 and 2021.

    Previous surveys

In 2016 the NHVR conducted the first National Roadworthiness Survey (NRS1), inspecting 7,130 vehicles across all states and territories, except Western Australia.

In 2021 we continued to monitor the fleet by conducting the second National Roadworthiness Survey (NRS 2021), across all Australian states in regional and metropolitan areas. Each vehicle received a comprehensive visual and mechanical inspection, undertaken using the National Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual (NHVIM).
