Mass exemptions
Mass exemptions include:
- a notice – authorises a class of vehicle to use certain parts of the road network under certain conditions and is published in the Government Gazette. A notice can be issued for up to 5 years, or
- a permit – authorises a specific vehicle/s to use part of the road system, subject to conditions. A permit can be issued for up to 3 years.
More information can be found at Notices and permit-based schemes | NHVR.
Signposted limits
There are different types of signposted limits under the Australian Road Rules which drivers must obey, including ones relevant to mass such as:
- load limit signs
- no truck signs.
Signposted limits restrict all vehicles to the limits imposed by the sign and are not overridden by mass exemptions.
The mass limit of a vehicle is the lesser of the manufacturer's mass limits, general mass limits or other mass limits such as those imposed by a sign for a bridge or road.
