Mobile ANPR cameras

The NHVR has 40 mobile Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera devices used by our Safety and Compliance Officers. ANPR cameras automatically detect the number plates of passing heavy vehicles.

These cameras help us to obtain information on the national heavy vehicle fleet to enhance our compliance activities and focus on high-risk operators and increase efficiency for compliant heavy vehicle drivers and make roads safer. The ANPR camera devices used by the NHVR are on:

  • roadside trailers
  • camera mounted vehicles
  • a drone.

Locations

Being mobile means the camera can be moved and used in different places. Safety and Compliance Officers can deploy the mobile ANPR camera devices in NHVR jurisdictions, including:

  • Australian Capital Territory
  • Queensland
  • South Australia
  • Tasmania
  • Victoria

What is the data being used for?

Footage is retained in a secure data system and will be used to develop policies and programs to increase road safety. Section 659 of the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) empowers the NHVR to monitor compliance with the law.

As a result of a camera sighting a Safety and Compliance Officer may then intercept a vehicle at a suitable location.

This data will improve our targeted on-road enforcement and compliance activities. It will help us to focus our compliance activities on operators most likely to be doing the wrong thing, while reducing impacts to compliant operators.
