Wine producers, wine grape grower and transporter of grapes and bottled wine are required to comply with the Chain of Responsibility requirements under the Heavy Vehicle National Law. This includes ensuring that goods are not overloaded, that they are secured properly and that drivers are not encouraged or pressured to speed or drive while fatigued.
To ensure a consistent approach to Chain of Responsibility across wine growing regions of Australia and assist businesses to meet their obligations, a new Registered Industry Code of Practice is being developed by the South Australian Wine Industry Association (SAWIA) in partnership with Australian Grape & Wine Inc (AGW).
These stakeholder meetings provide an opportunity for the wine industry to discuss key issues and practical solutions in relation to Chain of Responsibility compliance to ensure any Code of Practice reflect industry needs and requirements.
The meetings are aimed at wine producers, grape growers, vineyard contractors and transporters of wine grapes. There is no cost to attend the meeting.

The project will be completed in October 2023 through funding received from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator. NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto said the funding was part of $5.5 million being distributed under the 2020-21 Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative, supported by the Federal Government.
“Heavy vehicle safety is everyone’s responsibility and through local safety programs, supported by local experts, we can make our roads safer for all road users,” Mr Petroccitto said.
“Twenty-six recipients from across Australia were supported this year to deliver programs targeting heavy vehicle safety. From road safety education, to truckie physical and mental health, to the investigation of braking technologies, tyres and pavement wear, these diverse projects will all make a big difference to safety.
“The NHVR is also looking forward to working with the South Australian Wine Industry Association and Australian Grape & Wine to deliver safety outcomes for all road users in grape growing regions of Australia.”
