The NHVR was excited to be on location for the successful on-road trial of the double stacked container transport combination.
This stage one trial saw the instrumented double-stacked B-double combination being the first of its kind to operate on both public and port roads. The NHVR has supported the development of this Australian (and possibly world) first vehicle in close collaboration with the Port of Brisbane, O’Phee and Drake Trailers and Qube.
This on-road trial was the culmination of a rigorous assessment program to evaluate the safety performance of the combination. The NHVR has developed the standards and performance requirements for the concept, conducted computer modelling and simulation of the vehicle, as well as physical testing of the stability of combination. Specific operating conditions such as vehicle speed or wind speed were also considered in the assessment to ensure that high productivity comes with the highest levels of safety.
This innovative combination will significantly increase productivity even over the existing very efficient Super-B and PBS A-doubles currently in operation as the Project London vehicle is designed to move 4 forty-foot or 8 empty twenty-foot shipping containers at a time, stacked to an impressive height of over 7 meters.
Congratulations to Qube, O’Phee Trailers and the Drake Group and the Port of Brisbane for the successful milestone. The NHVR is proud to be part of this ground-breaking initiative and we look forward to taking part in more innovation driving productivity and safety to new (double-stacked) heights!
