HVSI celebrates NAIDOC week

10-07-2025

When Aaron joined the Accelerating Ambitions project — funded by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI), supported by the Australian Government — he wasn’t starting from scratch. A proud First Nations man from Palawa Country, Aaron was already known to GM Cartage and Contracting through previous subcontracted work, and both he and the team saw potential for a stronger partnership.

Aaron had previously attempted to obtain a heavy vehicle licence, but the experience wasn’t a positive one, leaving him hesitant to try again. Still, the value of the licence became increasingly clear — offering better job security, extra income through casual driving, and a competitive edge in the civil construction sector.

With support from Accelerating Ambitions, Aaron joined GM Cartage and Contracting and was mentored by the team. His first assignment — carting chicken manure — was no easy task, and the team joked they weren’t sure he’d be back the next day. But he returned, and his persistence and strong work ethic quickly stood out.

After gaining real-world experience, Aaron completed a three-day heavy vehicle course with On Road Off Road. The time on site gave him the confidence and skills he needed to approach the practical test, which he passed with a perfect score — even while navigating peak hour traffic.

Aaron now holds a heavy vehicle licence and continues to work casually with GM Cartage and Contracting. For him, the program has delivered real value — and for the Accelerating Ambitions team, it’s another example of how targeted funding, practical training, and industry mentoring can lead to lasting results.
