Heavy vehicle drivers urged to watch out for trains this Rail Safety Week

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is reminding heavy vehicle drivers to stay alert when travelling on and around the rail network and never take risks at level crossings, as part of this year’s Rail Safety Week (11-17 August).

NHVR Chief Operations Officer Paul Salvati said the TrackSAFE Foundation’s Rail Safety Week message this year - to expect the unexpected – is vital.

“Train frequencies vary and can occur at any time of day or night – always check for trains and follow the signs and signals,” Mr Salvati said.

“Most level crossing collisions involving heavy vehicles occur in regional areas, where there may not be any grade separation or boom gates, so please watch out for trains.”

A survey commissioned by Transport for New South Wales found almost half of heavy vehicle drivers (44%) admitted to sometimes engaging in unsafe driving behaviours around level crossings, such as driving through a level crossing when tired, visibility was poor or as part of a non-approved route.

“It’s important heavy vehicle drivers plan their journey ahead of time and consider any potential challenges associated with the route,” said Mr Salvati.

“Only drive over a level crossing once you have clear visibility and you’re certain there is enough time and space for your vehicle to safely reach the other side and clear the crossing.”

“Collisions and near misses at level crossings put lives at risk and affect the health and wellbeing of the transport industry and wider community.

“We are working together with the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator and the Australian Rail Track Corporation to improve national level crossing safety for all road users.”

The NHVR is also an organisation member of the National Level Crossing Safety Committee, which ensures a nationally consistent approach to level crossing safety.
