Transport activities include all the activities associated with the use of a heavy vehicle on a road. It includes safety systems, business processes such as contract negotiation and communication and decision making, as well as the activities normally associated with the transport and logistics sector such as training, scheduling, route planning, managing premises, selecting and maintaining vehicles, packing, loading and unloading.
Example of transport activities
Under section 5 of the HVNL, transport activities include all the activities associated with the use of a heavy vehicle on a road. Transport activities are broad and vary between parties in the CoR and extend beyond driving and operating vehicles, to include the systems, processes and decisions that influence how the heavy vehicle transport task is planned, managed and carried out.
Transport activities include all the activities associated with the use of a heavy vehicle on a road. It includes safety systems, business processes such as contract negotiation and communication and decision making, as well as the activities normally associated with the transport and logistics sector such as training, scheduling, route planning, managing premises, selecting and maintaining vehicles, packing, loading and unloading. The examples in the HVNL are not exhaustive.
The definition of transport activities means activities, including business practices and making decisions, associated with the use of a heavy vehicle on a road, including, for example –
- contracting, directing or employing a person –
- to drive the vehicle; or
- to carry out another activity associated with the use of the vehicle (such as maintaining or repairing the vehicle); or
- consigning goods for transport using the vehicle; or
- scheduling the transport of goods or passengers using the vehicle; or
- packing goods for transport using the vehicle; or
- managing the loading of goods onto or unloading of goods from the vehicle; or
- loading goods onto or unloading goods from the vehicle; or
- receiving goods unloaded from the vehicle.
