Noisy vehicles, in particular from exhaust brakes (endurance braking), is a common complaint from residents in built-up areas.
There is no limit on the amount of noise that an endurance brake can make, as it is a safety system built into the heavy vehicle. The NHVR does not have any ability to take enforcement action for the noise level of exhaust brakes.
In some circumstances, there may be a sign installed in the area limiting the use of exhaust brakes. These are advisory signs only and are not enforceable.
If there is no sign installed limiting the use of exhaust brakes in your area, you can contact the road manager of your local council if it is impacting the community. The road manager may assess the complaint and determine if signage is appropriate.
This advice does not apply to heavy vehicles making noise as a result of poor maintenance or engine/emission tampering. This type of noise complaint can be made to:
