Roadworthy Heavy Vehicles Made Easy! Workshop in Jamestown

15-07-2022

To support National Farm Safety Week, Grain Producers SA (GPSA) will host a free heavy vehicle roadworthy workshop from 9.30am on Monday 18 July at the Jamestown Football Club.

Primary producers are invited to attend the Roadworthy Heavy Vehicles… Made Easy! Workshop to receive practical information on road safety and compliance.

The workshop presentations include:

  • Understanding the National Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual by Natwide Personnel
  • Heavy rigid, semi-trailer, and b-double vehicle simulation training by South Australian Road Transport Association
  • A heavy vehicle safety inspection demonstration by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator
  • A heavy vehicle roadworthiness maintenance demonstration by Kelly Bros at their garage

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Catherine King said the workshop was co-funded by the Australian Government through the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative.

“The workshop provides a forum for primary producers in SA to discuss how to effectively manage heavy vehicle compliance; freeing up the sector to prioritise production and trade.

“Farmers are an essential part of the supply chain so it’s important they uphold their chain of responsibility obligations, ensuring safer outcomes for themselves and all road users.”

GPSA Regional Field Officer Shane Gale said this National Farm Safety Week, primary producers should focus on farm work environments and the risks and hazards that combine when using public roads.

“The Jamestown Roadworthy Heavy Vehicles … Made Easy! workshop is designed to upskill primary producers on heavy vehicle safety and make compliance easier to understand."

“The feedback we have received already from surveys and focus groups as part of our Moving Ag Machinery … Made Easy! project has identified heavy vehicle maintenance and roadworthiness as key safety and compliance issues primary producers wanted to better understand.”

NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto said on the day the NHVR’s Safety and Compliance Officers (SCOs) will provide guidance and education on what they look for when checking a vehicle.

“Our SCOs will demonstrate a roadworthy assessment using a Vehicle Inspection Trailer to discuss the key maintenance areas they focus on."

“This workshop gives participants the opportunity to openly ask any questions on vehicle compliance, have their vehicle inspected and receive vehicle maintenance tools and tips.”
