Overheight vehicle investigation results in Chain of Responsibility improvement notices

Earlier this year, a heavy vehicle carrying portable aeroplane stairs hit the overheight warning dongles on General Holmes Drive in Mascot before stopping at the entrance of the Airport Tunnel.

The heavy vehicle and load height were measured at 4.58m, with the permitted height of the vehicle being 4.3m. Considering the applicable dimension adjustment in favour of the accused, the vehicle’s alleged height was 4.55m, an excess height of 25cm.

NHVR welcomes appointment of new Chief Structural Engineer

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is pleased to announce the appointment of Stewart Garden as Chief Structural Engineer, commencing on January 8, 2024.

Stewart brings extensive experience across the UK and Australia, where he has worked within a variety of bridge teams responsible for asset inspections as well as major infrastructure project delivery.

NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto OAM said Mr Garden’s knowledge of bridge engineering and infrastructure management will help bolster the NHVR’s work in bridge assessments.

NHVR launches innovative Pavement Impact Comparison Calculator to improve productivity and road longevity

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has launched the interactive Pavement Impact Comparison Calculator (Pavement Calculator) for consultation, to enable road managers to understand the long-term pavement effects of freight activity on roads.

This beta release follows the successful introduction of their first tool, the Freight PASS last month, and represents NHVR’s continued commitment to empowering better decision-making in the road transport industry.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has taken action against a company after discovering systemic fatigue management and other serious breaches

The NHVR investigations unit charged the company after analysing National Driver Work Diaries, fuel records, GPS data, and heavy vehicle sightings, revealing systemic issues with fatigue management, scheduling, and speed management, leading to a breach of Section 26C of the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), a Category 3 Offence.

NHVR urges drivers to take a break ahead of driver fatigue campaign

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is reminding heavy vehicle drivers to follow work and rest requirements ahead of a campaign to reduce fatigue related crashes on national roads.

The campaign, which runs from 18-23 September across NSW, is part of the NHVR’s regulatory strategy to inform, educate and enforce – whether via on-road compliance or industry engagement.

In the past year there have been 48 fatalities from heavy vehicle crashes in NSW, with approximately 65 per cent of fatal crashes occurring outside the metropolitan area.
