Discussion Paper - Implementation of Safer Freight Vehicle reforms (PDF, 830KB)

This paper identifies the in-service implications of the Safer Freight Vehicle (SFV) reforms that are being proposed by the Federal Government.

What is it?

The discussion paper details the NHVR's approach to implementation of proposed changes to the Australian Design Rules (ADRs) and focuses on the in-service implications of these reforms.

The paper looks at the first package of amendments that propose an increase in overall vehicle width and requirement for these vehicles to be fitted with certain safety technologies.

It outlines the key issues identified with the implementation of the SFV reforms and proposes how the NHVR would approach these issues.

Why we consulted

If successful, these reforms represent some of the most significant changes to the design of heavy vehicle seen in more than a generation.

So that the in-service implementation of these reforms is not unduly delayed, the NHVR is seeking feedback on the implementation of the first package of Safer Freight Vehicle reforms from operators and other interested parties.
